My personal journey through stress

Stress. Just hearing the word used to send shivers down my spine. Stress was a dark cloud that loomed over every challenging situation, a sentiment that I shared with many around me. But what if I told you that I've come to see stress in a different light? What if, instead of being the villain in my life story, stress has become an unexpected hero? Interestingly, stress is also deeply woven into the fabric of human storytelling. The way we narrate our experiences with stress directly influences how we feel and react to it.
Stress: The Story I Once Told Myself
For most of my life, I believed that stress was an unwelcome guest. It seemed to pop up at the most inconvenient times, making everyday challenges feel overwhelming. The pandemic only intensified these feelings, adding worries about health, family, and job security to the mix.
While it's natural to feel stress, letting it consume me wasn't healthy. I knew I needed a change, but how? Could there possibly be a silver lining to all this stress? That's when I stumbled upon the work of Kelly McGonigal.

״על אף שטבעי להרגיש סטרס, לתת לו לכרסם בי לא היה בריא. ידעתי שאני צריכה שינוי״

McGonigal, a renowned health psychologist, shifted my entire perspective on stress. She shared a study that tracked 30,000 adults over a decade. The findings were astonishing: those who believed their stress was harmful had a 43% increased risk of dying. But those who faced high stress and didn't view it as detrimental? They were the most likely to be alive at the end of the study.
This revelation made me question everything. Was the real enemy not stress, but how I perceived it?
My Brain's Role in Stress
I began to understand that it wasn't stress itself that was the problem, but how my brain interpreted it. If I saw stress as a negative force, my body responded accordingly. But if I could reframe my perspective and see stress as a potential ally, I could harness its power for good.

״על אף שטבעי להרגיש סטרס, לתת לו לכרסם בי לא היה בריא. ידעתי שאני צריכה שינוי״

Kelly's words resonated deeply with me: “Stress is what arises in you when something you care about is at stake. It’s your thoughts, your emotions, your biology … it’s the adrenaline. … It’s all the stuff that emerges to help you meet a moment that matters."
Embracing the Power of Stress
The more I delved into this new perspective, the more I realized that the sensations of stress were eerily similar to those of excitement. My heart would race, hormones would surge, and I'd be filled with energy. The key difference was the narrative I attached to these feelings.
By channeling this energy and viewing it as excitement rather than dread, I noticed a shift in my reactions. As Kelly McGonigal pointed out, this shift can lead to a healthier physiological response, increased energy, reduced inflammation, and even heightened positive emotions like confidence and enthusiasm.
Conclusion: My Reimagined Relationship with Stress
Who would have thought that stress could be a friend rather than a foe? It all comes down to the stories we tell ourselves. By reframing my narrative around stress, I've been able to harness its power, turning once-daunting challenges into opportunities for growth.
