Managers, it is time for you to take off the masks

The new questions you need to ask yourself in meetings with clients and the teams you work with.

During our work with large and leading clients both locally and globally, we are required in each project to think from the end to the beginning. Therefore, before we embark on the work process, we embark on self inquiry: What makes a mere strategic consulting or a good presentation to a one that truly leaves a mark?

On the occasion of the Purim holiday, we want to use this following article, to tell you that in many cases, the magic or the unique twist lies at the very moment when "the masks are removed”. When we stop talking in slogans, abandon the need to create some ideal image, and connect to something deeper, primal. Often, it is the inner motivation, the "why" behind what we do, and the meaning it holds for us.

In the business and achievement-oriented world we live in, there is a tendency to provide "the right answers," those that will make us look good in the eyes of the questioner, but not necessarily what we truly feel or think. We seek the stories behind the achievements, the interesting things that lie at the core of success or failure, bringing to light the unique perspective of that person in the buisness. We want to hear that which is oftentimes left unsaid.

What does it mean?

The first and very significant step before any of our projects is the kickoff meeting. This meeting has several central goals: first is introduction; second, understanding the essence and goal of the project. Then, we dive into the professional details and try to learn as much as possible about the client, the market, the competitive environment, the challenges, the objectives, the direction we are heading, and more. All of this is to give us a good starting point for the journey ahead.

We don't just listen and ask questions (many questions).

Our approach is rooted in active listening, accompanied by a relentless pursuit of the untold stories and hidden perspectives. We dig deep, posing thought-provoking questions that reveal the essence of achievements, failures, and the unique perspectives of the individuals behind the business. We strive to bring to light the “Why” of the business. Instead of coming up with strategies out of thin air, we generate them from within the conversation. This includes the words you choose to use or avoid, the pauses for thought and your body language when speaking. We ask guiding questions, amf your answers form the basis for our briefing. We dig deeper to reveal the places beneath the surface which are slightly less conscious and a little less obvious. Often this is where the treasure is hidden.

The art of storytelling through questions
Here are some questions that can help you extract more from your meetings with clients, colleagues, or employees:

  • Why? Why? Why? – You won't believe what you'll discover when you repeat this simple question.
  • Do you have something you want to convey without saying it directly, meaning, is there a hidden message?
  • If you had a front-page headline in the newspaper tomorrow, what would you want it to say?
  • What is the most significant thing you have learned from the successes/failures you had?
  • What things do you choose to tell your family about work during dinners?
  • Imagine the business with you and without you, before you joined and after you'll leave. What would you like to leave behind?
  • What personal and professional mark do you want to leave?

We are confident that the answers you'll receive will be much more interesting and useful to the process, and we invite you to consult with our storytelling experts before embarking on your next big project!
