Trends In Training

When we think about trends, it's about the combination of what's relevant and what's new.

What do people need when they are learning?
What organizations need from their employees?
And… what has changed?

#1# Micro- Learning
Our attention span is getting smaller and smaller. If you're reading this, well done! Creating bite sized content modules which the learners can consume at their own pace and terms giving a great solution to this problem, allowing fast engaging learning process. However, chopping information to small pieces often leading simplification of complex ideas, which making it difficult to create deep understanding if needed. Another challenge is our tendency to overload a lot of short sessions, or learn one session at a time with wide gaps between them.
#2# Gamification
It is no secret we humans enjoy playing games!
So why not combining elements from gaming design such as scores, levels, prizes and record boards and insert them into our training programs?
Duolingo is a great example of how a teeth-cracking process like language studying can become fun and interactive by those elements.

Games also have their limits since it allows pattern teaching more than theoretical knowledge. Further more, the learner's focus can wander to their losing or winning and forget about the initial purpose, so we need to be smart about those reinforcements

#3# Artificial Intelligence
The AI revolution coming fast towards the training world, creating new opportunities for personally built training experiences. After collecting data about the learners behavior, AI algorithms can adjust the content just as Netflix does with series and movies. Companies can also explore which of the materials more interesting and even quantify the affect on employees' skills and performance.
At the near future, AI could tailor a whole training process including automatic content creation and learning style adaptions for each learner.
creation and learning style adaptions for each learner. These tools has great potential, nevertheless we all should consider the risks of learning experience with minimized human communication and the "black box" every automation creates in the decision making process. AI should be combined with other methods and help us benefit from all the worlds.
Happy Training!
